The ladies arrived for the LYCE on Saturday morning but the conditions were too rough to sail. The Northwest wind did diminish so that when the men headed out at 2 PM it was flat calm. Teams practiced their spinnaker work in the variable conditions but the fleet struggled to get out to the Race Committee (Mary Ellen Wefer & Debra Dumas) that was out on the course. Eventually a light breeze filled back in from the northwest and it built and built until the fleet sailed home in 15-20 mph.
Overall, the wind ranged from 3-12 across the 5 windward-leeward-windward races for the MYCE. Paul Wefer & Mike Emmert took a liking to the strong conditions and won the last four races to win the MYCE for the third year in a row. John Dawson & Doug Wefer showed they still have the touch to finish second and Anthony Dekkers & Dan Deegan revealed to be closet spinnaker pros to finish third. The Don Kavanagh – Dave Lawson team modeled consistency to finish fourth while Past Commodores Jim Arnemann & Tim O’Rourke hoped the regatta ended after their first race second but still had moments where they showed off their experience. Last minute registrants, Norm Sorenson & Mike Kontonotas finished 6th but showed they’ll be a force in years to come.
