Snapper Derby

Dawn broke on September 7th with the windy remnants of hurricane Dorian.  But it was sunny and despite the relatively early start time of 8:30AM the kids were drawn to the SCYC dock for the 18th annual snapper derby.   They were not disappointed.  Close to 100 fish were caught and in addition to snappers [baby bluefish] we saw a fluke, multiple porgies and even a sea robin to make things interesting.  In the 13 and over group Jackson Bachner walked away singlehandedly with the first fish and most fish.  In the 12 and under group we saw first fish caught by Henry Bubbico.  Leo Rassin was the fish whisperer with high hook of 14!  Hot on his tail representing the future female anglers of America was Rayna Giberstein with 10 fish, and Blake Bowen rounding out third place with 8.  Special award was garnered on Charlotte Emmert for being the youngest angler and catching 2.

Next year we plan on making it interesting to include a 40 and over category for all of those parents who would like to participate alongside their kids and even some who just want to test their angling acumen.

Congratulations to all the participants, this year’s winners, and to the parents who helped put this once a year event on their calendars!
